Upper Fuy River aka Rio Fuy Alto

The Upper Fuy is one of Chile’s favorite waterfall runs.  Imagine 4KM packed full of relatively easy rapids, quality cascades and boofs, all in warm turquoise clear water. For these reasons many companies offer guided trips down the Fuy.

PKH hostess Emily and Megan take photos at the second drop of Las Leonas on Chile's Rio Fuy.

The Fuy sections Upper, Las Pumas, Middle and Lower connect Lagos Neltume to Lago Panguipulli.  The clear turquoise waters in the heart of the Lake District are remarkable.  At higher waters the Upper Fuy is full on with severe consequences.  Although, at normal flows this is an easy class IV run with a guide.  For easier day you may put-in at Las Leonas and paddle the last 1.5 KM.

Points of Interest

  • Class III-IV are normal flows, V at high flows.
  • Skill Level:  Class IV boater
  • Gradient:  multiple clean cascades, fast moving water with eddies at bottom of drops.
  • River Type:  Clear turquoise, currents, eddy lines, some play boating
  • Related Rivers:  Lower Trancura, Lower Liucura, Truful Truful, Upper Fuy, San Pedro
  • Try to stop for a drink or tour of Hotel Baobab right at Las Leonas.  This is one of the most spectacular pieces of ecological architecture to be built in Chile.

Horizon. Stroke. Time it. Ride that boof. Stomp.

Description:  The Lago Panguipulli and Fuy area is breathtaking and worth a day trip.  You’ll put-in on Lago Neltume as it’s solar heated warm water enters into the short lived Rio Fuy.  A cool experience is feeling the warm water while looking at snow-capped mountains.  If it’s your first time then you’ll want to scout each drop.

Best Suited for:  Experts with scouting experience.  Or Advanced-intermediates with experienced guide.

Best Time of Year: January to mid-February

Rapids:  Las Leonas Cascades. Scout them.

Rooster Tail in the Middle-  This is not the rapid name but rather what happens.  After Las Leonas you’ll be able to eddy out river left and see this drop.  The rooster tail in the middle is obviously from a piton rock.  You’ll have to charge hard left or right to miss.  There’s an easy sneak ledge on river left.

Bird Sucker- Cause it sucks birds from the sky.  This eight-foot boof on the right forms a giant hydraulic on river left.  We’ve seen great boaters swim out of this drop and at high water this is one scary looking drop.  At low water it’s an easy boof on right.

Related Rivers:  Middle Fuy, Lower Fuy, Upper Palguin, Rio Llancahue, Rio San Pedro
