Pucon Kayak Hostel is the unofficial Chilean gateway for anyone who wants adventure. Looking to rent gear, hop on a shuttle, get beta, take lessons, or sleep next to a river? We’ve got you covered. Want to relax, take a yoga class, read a good book, learn Spanish, take a trek in the Andes Mountains, spend the day on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), and/or meditate to the sounds of the river? You’ve come to the right place. PKH is the result of a dedicated team working for many years under the vision of founder and owner David Hughes. Today the hostel continues to grow and evolve thanks to the tireless work of our staff, volunteers, and guests. Together, we have created more than a place – Pucon Kayak Hostel is unique community exploding with personality.
Like many visitors to Chile, David dreamt about buying land and building. In 2006 he took his life savings and searched for land with river access. He thought perhaps he would find a small cabin or simple structure that would allow him to live as he built. What he found on the banks of the Rio Trancura far surpassed his dreams (and budget) by leaps and bounds. David asked for advice and heard from more than one trusted advisor, “If it is as good as you say it is then do everything in your power to secure the funds. In five years time you’ll be glad you did your homework.” So David began negotiating a sale, still uncertain whether he could pull it off. The property came with an existing hosteria, which served immediately as a base for David’s traveling kayak high school, New River Academy. As part of his routine, David began waking up early each morning for a long walk along the river bank. It was during these walks that his vision for Pucon Kayak Hostel grew, and he quickly began sketching additional structures and creating a plan to attract kayakers and other water aficionados.
“The persona or vibe of PKH is important. We want people hanging out that love to kayak, are the person you’d invite for a pint at the pub, are safe and knowledgable, and of course hard working around the hostel.”
And so the tradition continues today. Pucon Kayak Hostel hosts groups and individuals from all around the world. We organize trips, run summer camps for kids, provide kayak instruction for all ages and ability levels, facilitate adventures of a lifetime, and host all kinds of travelers as they pass through. When you book a trip or stay with Pucon Kayak Hostel, you will experience the warm hospitality of trained professionals and you can count on quality gear ready when you arrive.
“It has always been a reward to share beautiful places or a bit of knowledge articulated in a way that makes a rapid or kayak move seem easy. So, hosting nomads and sharing my Chilean experiences has become a role that offers lots of enjoyment.” – Owner David Hughes
